Education and teaching

Reykjavík City primary schools follow the national curriculum for primary schools, with reference to the Reykjavík City Education Policy. The main objective of the Policy is for all children to grow, develop and feel happy in a democratic society that is based on human rights and respect for the diversity of human life.

Through robust school and recreation activities, children and young people gain education and experience to realize their dreams and have a positive impact on their environment and society.

Student assessment

Hlíðaskóli is a formative learning school. This means educational assessment is an integral part of learning and teaching at Hlíðaskóli. Formative learning provides students with daily guidance based on the school curriculum's competency goals.

At the end of each school year, students receive a report card with grades A to D for the skills they've acquired.

Teaching methods

The school follows formative learning principles in all its operations. Formative learning aims to empower students to take responsibility for their own education. It is based on five pillars that promote a positive learning culture where mistakes are used for improvement, goals and benchmarks are clear, and planning involves discussions where students can express themselves about the curriculum. Together, these methods empower students and make them more active and responsible in their own learning.

Digital Growth

Students in grades 4-10 at Hlíðaskóli receive a Chromebook on loan from Reykjavík City. Students in grades 8-10 can take the computer home. For a student to take the computer home, parents or guardians must agree to Reykjavík City's terms. You can agree electronically here.

Students return the computer to the school in spring and receive it again at the start of school in the fall. Make sure to include accessories, charger, and stylus with the computer.

Students in grades 1-3 have access to iPad tablets.

Mentor

Mentor is an information system for students, parents and school staff. Guardians and students receive a Mentor password. On the family page, guardians can view their children's schedules, homework, educational assessments, attendance and more.

Attendance guidelines

The school emphasizes student punctuality. All children aged 6 to 16 must attend school, and parents/guardians are responsible for their enrollment, attendance, and participation.

If attendance issues arise, parents/guardians and the school must respond. To ensure effective responses, Reykjavík's primary schools follow unified guidelines and rules.
